It's clean when you walk in. Prices are a bit higher but there is a good selection (if you're from the upper east coast it's like Shaws or Hannaford, mid coast it's in between Food Lion and Wegmans) however, keep in mind most places in HI are more expensive than on the mainland due to getting supplies to HI. I would not recommend using the the bathrooms unless you have to. Staff are friendly and helpful. Most of the groceries we bought were between $1 and $8 more than on the mainland (in comparison to the East Coast). Examples: Oat milk around $7 for 1.74 L. 3lbs of ground meat around $30. 1lb Deli meats are around $20 and canned foods such as corn we paid around $2.50.

Best selection of meats, including the Lamb! You can get such a wide selection of beautiful Lamb Chops, Ground Lamb, Lamb Shanks, Lamb Roast, and beautiful Rack Of Lamb! I also enjoy their wide selection of Local Angus Beef! It’s my first stop before I go anywhere else to find meats. Especially because they almost always have what I want in the meat department, and they’re always interested in making sure that they carry what I come there for. I’ve never gotten that at any other Butchered Meat Department, unless going to the specialty stand alone Butcher Shops. Highly recommend Safeway Maka’ala for selection of fresh meats!

We Bought there 5$ fried chicken deal on Friday May 8, Was a good deal, but after we eat it for lunch, we had a tummy ache. Must not be prepared properly or could be the oil needs to be changed. We throw it out the rest.😔

I have been shopping at Safeway for over forty years. I have seen Safeway constantly evolve to make shopping there more convinant and so many more choices. I have been shopping at the Hilo, Hawaii location for 7 years. Thank you Safeway for always making my shopping experience so nice. Thank you to the staff for always being so helpful. You know, even though Safeway is kinda wordly, I think this Safeway has a definate home feel! Service is excellent! Go visit and experience it all! Aloha! Re:update! Safeway in Hilo (to me) has kinda the most awesome customer service and it reflects on the management team as they all show compassion and empathy with the utmost willingness to help!! Go check the guys by the meat and seafood department! Laughing and cutting and listening to customers and making everyone feel right "at home"!! It isn't the cheapest place to buy but the overall 5 star experience is "worth it"!! Go check it out for yourself! God bless and happy new year!!🌶️🌶️💥💥
